Bands and cut-off dates
Age groups, and the date a band is counted from
KRSS ACADEMY LTD runs four bands. A child goes into the band that holds their age on the cut-off date for the season, and stays in it for the whole season even if a birthday moves them during it — because a group that re-sorts itself every few weeks never settles, and a child who leaves friends mid-season usually leaves the session too.
The four bands on this floor
- Foundation, 4 to 6
- Forty-five minutes. Half the floor, four bays, and the game block played three against three with no goalkeeper. One coach to every six children on this band, and a second adult on the floor at all times.
- Development, 7 to 9
- Sixty minutes. Full floor. The skill block gets its three steps in full for the first time, and the game block becomes two games running at once across the court.
- Intermediate, 10 to 12
- Sixty minutes. Same shape, harder conditions: two-touch limits, a defender who plays properly from the start of the live step, and scores called but not written down.
- Senior, 13 to 16
- Seventy-five minutes. The extra fifteen go to the skill and game blocks. The game is played along the floor rather than across it, one pitch, five a side, and the cool-down includes the question a coach asks only this band: what would you change about that session.
Why the cut-off exists at all
A band needs a date or it has no edges. The academy counts a child's age on the first day of the season the place is offered for, writes that date on the offer, and uses the same date for every child in that season. A child who turns seven in February stays in foundation until the season ends, then moves up with the rest of the group rather than alone.
Two things are decided by a coach and not by the date. A child at the top of a band who is finding every session easy can be asked to train up for a block at a time, always with the parent told first. A child who has just moved up and is struggling with the longer session can drop back for the rest of the season, which is a routine arrangement here and is never described to the child as being sent down.
Band finder: age on a cut-off date
Type a date of birth and the cut-off date for the season, then the bands you want tested. The finder prints the subtraction it does, says whether the birthday had passed by the cut-off, and names which of the bands typed contains the result. The bands below are the academy's own, and you can replace them with any others to see where a date falls.
Working — age on the cut-off date
Date of birth12 April 2017
Cut-off date1 September 2026
Years between2026 − 2017 = 9
The birthday on 12 April 2026 falls on or before the cut-off, so that figure stands.
Age on the cut-off date: 9 years, 4 months and 20 days.

The bands are the ones typed into the box above. No governing body cut-off is applied here, and the sum places nobody in a group.
